With the world inundated these days with all manner of media, spare a thought for the tiny Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan which has only had television since 1999. While it may be some time before the people of Bhutan get to indulge in online bingo, the transition to a “media society makes for some very interesting observations on the impact of modern media.

UK online bingo players with families will be all too familiar with the grips surrounding TV and other sources of electronic entertainment. So when one Bhutanese woman reports getting into trouble with her husband over her watching habits, that old adage that there’s nothing new under the sun comes to mind.

“My husband scolds me, he says at this age I should be spending my time saying my prayers,” one woman is reported as saying. “He says that after I die, instead of doing the funeral rituals, he will just put my body next to a television.”

Since its inception in Bhutan, television has been tagged for destroying family life, introducing crime and raising juvenile delinquency in this peaceful land of ancient traditions.

My advice is to the Bhutanese government is unleash online bingo. At least the population will not have the problem of 87 channels and nothing to watch.

Search engine giant Google has said it will not review its current ban on gambling paid-search ads. This is in the wake of new advertising that that has successfully sidestepped Google’s own legislation.

The cause of this can be traced to a circumvention of Google’s rules by Sky, which has launched a search campaign that directs users to a Sky Poker-branded page on the Sky Poker TV channel.

This ad complies with Google regulations by not linking to a gambling site where people bet with actual money. However, the ad does show people gambling with real money.

Competing search engine Yahoo is taking the same route as Google. This, despite its entry into the UK poker sector. Yahoo told advertisers that it will no longer accept “advertisements that contain invitations to play, any mention of money (eg. GNB 1 000 jackpot), or any offers or incentives to take part in gaming (eg. bonus or benefit).

“Existing advertisements are currently being reviewed for compliance and we expect this process to be complete by mid June. If your advertisement is found to be non-compliant you will be notified by email and it will be suspended until the necessary changes are made.”

How does an industry win in such an environment, I ask you? With online bingo and online bingo halls already getting the short end of the stick thanks to UIGEA, this is just another example of the kind of difficulty facing this legitimate industry.

Well, who would have thought it? The US, it appears, is so intent on denying its citizens freedom of choice when it comes to playing online bingo and other forms of online gambling that it is willing to throw the entire WTO system into doubt over it.

The announcement by the US that it will unilaterally modify its original World Trade Organisation agreements to remove online gambling is nothing short of opening a Pandora’s box of mischief. Just when you thought they couldn’t do anything more stupid than the introduction of one of the internets worst laws (UIGEA), they top themselves with this cynical little ploy. They must really fear online bingo and gambling to want to face having to renegotiate a whole plethora of agreements on service related industries.

But then the US has money and time to burn. Here’s a quote from US Trade Representative spokesman John Veroneau: “We did not intend and do not intend to have gambling as part of our services agreement. What we are doing is just clarifying our commitments.”

Fine! Despite other countries managing to figure this out and exclude gambling from their commitments at the time of negotiation, the US is now happy to put in jeopardy hard-won agreements that some of the smaller developing nations need so badly to lift themselves out of poverty.

If you think I’m overreacting, think of it this way: “How does the US justify itself before small nations who rely on the spirit and the rule of law in order to take part in world trade when the Big Boys can simply walk away from their commitments to suit their own agendas?

Or maybe we just don’t care?

So, the US mainstream media is really starting to take up the great anti-online gambling issue, if an editorial by the LA Times is to be believed.

And why should it not? The editorial in question is a succinct look at the conflicting and sometimes downright hypocritical stance the US government has taken on this issue. With many well established online bingo halls and online bingo players caught up in the badly thought out mess that is the US’ UIGEA law, it’s refreshing to see that some in the US mainstream have grasped the utter stupidity of this law.

My hat is off to the editor at the LA Times for running this piece and pointing out that US policy makers need to get behind Congressman Barney Franks’ attempts at amending this law.

A recent study in the US has concluded that your typical housewife/mother in the US would earn US$138, 095 (approximately £66,000) per year for all the jobs she covers if she were paid each job’s going rate. £66,000!

According to Salary.com Inc, a Massachusetts-based compensation company, housewives and mothers perform at least ten separate jobs in what amounts to a 92-hour week. The jobs include housekeeper, cook, day care center teacher, laundry machine operator, van driver, facilities manager, janitor, computer operator, chief executive officer and psychologist.

The only conclusion I can draw here is that UK stay-at-home mothers, who are really no different to their US counterparts, have every right to indulge in a bit of online bingo fun. If you don’t play online bingo then you’re missing out on what may be one of the best ways to actually get paid for all the hard work you do. And who would deny you that right?

In my opinion it’s no wonder many UK mums play online bingo, what with all the great bonuses and jackpots available. Bingo Street has a solid core of stay-at-home mums checking out the latest online bingo news and promotions. It’s also a great place to meet people and play some of the best online bingo halls out there. Go mums!

The appointment of Gibtelcom’s Tim Bristow to the board of Party Gaming is a clear indication that one of the online gambling industry’s biggest players is bullish about the future.

Like many in the industry, Party Gaming was hit by the lose of the US market thanks to the implementation of that country’s new UIGEA law. Now it’s planning ahead for a more healthy online gambling environment and that’s good for all of us.

I have only limited experience with Party Gaming’s online bingo products, but their reputation is solid. With the kind of experience a seasoned telecommunications man like Tim Bristow brings, I’m sure we will see more of Party Gaming’s progress as the industry rebuilds in the wake of the UIGEA carnage.

I think I can speak for most of us in the online bingo community when I say it’s good to hear that Peter Andre, the husband of Foxy Bingo’s every popular Katie Price, is doing well after his recent brush with suspected meningitis.

It has been unfortunate for Ms Price and her husband that they have had to endure a flurry of unsubstantiated claims and internet rumors regards Peter Andre’s health. However, all’s well that ends well and it would seem it’s back to business for Ms Price and the crew over at Foxy Bingo.

It was only a matter of time before the pro-UIGEA forces in the US kick-started their campaign to head off Congressman Barney Frank’s attempt to inject some sense into the deeply unpopular law. Senator Kyl of Arizona is leading the charge but has been joined by five major professional and amateur sports organizations.

Primary amongst those organizations is the National Football League whose spokesman Martin Gold has said, “Our sports organizations would very strongly oppose any effort to legalize any online sports gamblingâ€?.

I was tickled to see the response by one Capital Hill staffer when he wrote: “Oh, I see ‘keep government out of pro sports’ but have it regulate my personal use of my home computer? Niceâ€?.

Enough said, I think most online bingo players would agree.

Things seem tough at e-wallet company Neteller if latest rumours circulating on the internet are true. The company may be undergoing a drastic downsizing programme which is not being helped by supposed insider leaks on negative company news, if a report by internet gaming portal Gambling911 is to be believed.

Already reeling from the unwanted attention foisted on it by the US Department of Justice’s crackdown on illegal gambling operations, Neteller has recently had to suspend its online card activities due to the Cirrus/Maestro network withdrawing support for it.

So what is happening at Neteller and should online bingo players who use the service be worried. Any comments from online bingo players out there that deal with Neteller would be greatly appreciated as it is becoming increasingly difficult to understand just where all this is heading.

News that a recent report by British company Global Betting and Gaming Consultants highlights a promising future for the online gambling industry will be most welcome by online bingo hall operators.

However, it must be noted that the future of the industry here in Europe is very much tempered by developments regards the liberalizing of certains EU member-states’ monopolistic policies. Until the relaxing of laws in such European countries truly allows for online bingo operators to provide their services free of restraint, the industry is still forced to factor in the unpleasant chance of falling foul of the law in countries such as Greece.

That said, the report does apparently acknowledge that the effect of the US’ UIGEA law has had a more profound effect than at first realized. However, it is comforting to note that this does not stop Global Betting and Gaming Consultants from painting a rosy future for the industry as a whole. The overall conclusion is that the industry is set to make gains and that can’t be a bad thing.
