The use of mobile phones in spreading the accessibility to online bingo is being touted as a major factor in the popular online game’s future growth, according to the UK’s Bingo Association.

Stephan Baldwin (not the actor) of the Bingo Association says mobile technology will help expand the online bingo industry, adding: “Mobile bingo may just open a new market because it provides a new channel for people accessing bingo.”

This is something you would never see in your average online bingo hall.  A New Jersey casino customer/player was recently ejected by the casino he was playing at on account of his poor personal hygiene.

The man in question had been playing for 17 hours straight and was apparently becoming a bit ripe for those around him.  He was finally asked to leave and now he’s seeking an apology from the casino for embarrassing him in front of the other customers.

His request for a free room to freshen up was also apparently refused. The man said to casino officials: “There’s no question I stink. I’m not denying it. I do have an odor. I’ve been playing for 17 hours.”

The moral of the story here folks is that you will never have to face this kind of thing if you stick with playing your bingo online.  That’s definitely one of the joys of online bingo as I see it.

I’m glad online bingo games celebrity Kerry Katona has won a libel action against a story which claimed she had once worked as a prostitute before becoming famous.  Given what she has been through over the last couple of years (home invasions, relationship problems, depression), I hope this goes some way to making things better for her.

Although she is best known as an ex-Atomic Kitten member, those who play bingo online will remember her as the front person to one of the more popular online bingo halls.

It must be somewhat galling for the people at online bingo hall Foxy Bingo to have to defend an expensive TV advertising campaign against a single complaint that it might appeal to children and lead them into a gambling problem.

The recent TV ad showed a congenial ‘Foxy’ (a man in a suited fox costume) strutting down a street amongst a throng of people all the while extolling the virtues of playing online bingo games at Foxy Bingo.

Pretty innocent stuff you would think?

Not so, according to one disgruntled viewer who claimed the ad targeted kiddies and this had to be stopped.  The full scrutiny of the Advertising Standards Agency was subsequently brought to bear – and then they said the ad was alright after all!

What a waste of time!  Amazing how one complaint can cause so much trouble.  I wonder if there is a some governmental body out there that caters for complaints made against complaints?

With things as tough as they are for the land bingo industry, there was a recent spark of hope in a possible £100 million windfall for bingo operators due to a ruling in favour of Rank’s assertion that the charging of VAT on some versions of interval bingo was in breach of the current European principle of fiscal neutrality.

If upheld, the ruling would be a major boost for an industry that finds itself on the ropes as customers make the switch to other forms of entertainment, most of all to online bingo.  For years the land bingo crowd has argued that they are unfairly taxed by the UK government and, when Rank won its ruling, there was genuine hope that things may change.

Not so fast…

The Treasury is not about to give up this cash-cow any time soon and has employed a delaying tactic by waiting until the last minute to appeal against the ruling in favour of Rank.

So the land bingo industry’s agony is to be prolonged.  In the meantime, bingo online continues to grow and is expected to be one of the few areas in gambling in general that can look forward to a rosy future.

I’m not gloating over land bingo’s tribulations, but when an industry starts putting its hopes in possibilities rather than taking a pro-active approach to doing something value-added to win back its dwindling customer base, that industry is in trouble.  At least in the case of Rank that company has invested in operating online bingo games in conjunction with its land bingo operations.  There may, however, come a time when all bingo will have to be online in nature.
