After all the money invested by those UK city councils on bids for a super casino, after all the hard work done in showing how a super casino can invigorate a local economy, and after having himself voted for the establishment of super casinos as engines for economic regeneration, the UK’s unelected Prime Minister has now backed away from his previous support for Manchester’s new Super Casino. The effect of Gordon Brown’s decision to distance himself from the Super Casino project and call for its re-evaluation will be devastating to Manchester. Though I’m a commentator on the online bingo industry, which theoretically sees the Manchester casino as a competing industry, I can’t but feel sympathy for the feelings of betrayal those in Manchester must now be going through. Despite calls not to push the panic button by Manchester City Council leader Richard Leese (”We will continue to push for a destination casino in East Manchester,” he said on hearing the news), one must now assume the project is dead in the water. For those of us in the bingo online industry, this news does not have a direct effect on how we operate or how many online bingo games players there are. However, it is a clear sign that one has to remain vigilant when it comes to the trust we put in politicians in looking after our interests. Will Gordon Brown seek a change in heart for the worse over current regulations governing our own free online bingo industry?
