Reports that UK land bingo club operator Mayfair Gaming is to receive a £10 million cash injection from Hermes Private Equity to “shore up its investment,” is yet more evidence of the troubled future facing land bingo as it grapples with a smoking ban, a tough tax regime and (wait for it!) the “credit crunch”.

I have no doubt that the demise of Northern Rock and Bear Sterns in the US is somehow directly related to the sliding fortunes of the land bingo industry.  These days, slip on a banana peel and ‘it’s the credit crunch’ that is obviously to blame.

Maybe I’m being too harsh on those who now invoke the credit crunch as responsible for their woes.  After all, even titans of Wall Street have succumbed to this financial crisis we have all been hearing about.

But what about online bingo and those online bingo games operators plying their trade in these ‘credit crunch’ stricken times?  Have they been affected?  Let’s see what the evidence says.

According to a report by BingoPort.co.uk, a UK-based bingo information site, its traffic data shows an increase of 19% in the number of daily players taking part in online bingo games at UK online bingo halls.  Not bad in a time of financial crisis, eh?

It would seem online bingo is somewhat ahead of the game when it comes to beating the effects of the ‘credit crunch’, the smoking ban and a double tax regime.  I know which flavour of bingo I’ll be betting on to thrive in the tough times we are all being told is about to break upon us.
