Bingo calls originated partly as a form of entertainment and audience participation and partly as a way of making the drawn numbers clearer over the noise of a crowded hall. Bingo calls are what Bingo Callers shout out when a specific number is presented, each number associated with its own unique slang phrase.
Bingo Callers had their peak at the seaside resorts of mid 20th century Britain, where national competitions would be held to award exceptional callers prizes and medals.
Bingo calls slowly disappeared due to the increased use of modern machines such as computerised draw machines, rather than rotary drum or air pressure powered divides. Also political correctness about some of more frolicsome calls was a part of the reason for the slow death of bingo calls. Online bingo games use the very best and latest technology, making the role of the caller redundant – check out the Online vs Offline section for more details.
It is still good fun to know a little of the nostalgia surrounding the game, and a great way to impress the folks in the chat rooms!
