Ban on gambling advertising to end

March 14, 2007

Broadcasters have received the news that a current UK-wide ban on gambling advertising is going to be lifted.

According to a Reuters report, the secretary of the Committee of Advertising Practice and the Broadcast Committee of Advertising Practice, Roger Wisby, has said the lifting of the ban signals a significant change in the way betting and gaming can be advertised in the UK.

Guidelines to the new regulations place a heavy emphasis on promoting responsible gambling and all ads cannot be targeted at young children.

"Although advertisers will enjoy more freedom to advertise their services across media, the public can be confident that they will do so within a stringent framework," Mr. Wisby was reported as saying by Rueters.

The new wave of gambling advertisements are to be monitored by the Advertising Standards Authority. Any breaches of the code will mean advertisers could be referred to the regulator Ofcom to consider legal actions. The new regulations will have little impact on the advertising of online bingo in the UK as this growing industry is already well regulated.
