If a report in ThisIsMoney.co.uk is correct, online gambling companies PartyGaming and 888.com may be in the firing line of the US Department of Justice (DoJ) as they seek new targets in their hunt to prosecute online gaming operators under the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA).
Unidentified sources in the ThisIsMoney report have speculated that US authorities may seek to recoup profits made by the companies before their recent withdrawal from the online gambling US market.
Online bingo players and operators of online bingo halls who are regular visitors to Bingo Street will be aware of the fate of online payment processing company Neteller who fell foul of UIGEA and ended up having to pay out big to the same US authorities.
ThisIsMoney has estimated in its report US authorities could be after as much as US$900 million (£445m) from PartyGaming and up to US$120 million for 888.com.
If the report turns out to be true, then PartyGaming and 888.com will see their financial viability take a huge hit. Some even suggest that making the payout could put both companies out of business.
Though both companies were said to have entered into discussions with DoJ officials earlier this year, there is no confirmation from either company or the DoJ that action is to be taken against either PartyGaming or 888.com. Both PartyGaming and 888.com are not big players in the UK online bingo industry and offer only limited free online bingo games as part of their overall gaming packages.
