Swedish gambling monopoly in EC sights - Online Bingo News

Sweden’s gambling monopoly Svenske Spel may well be heading for court after its rejection of the European Commission's (EC) claim it’s operations are contrary to European Union (EU) law.
The EC believes Svenske Spel is breaking EU law by excluding gambling services, such as online bingo and free online bingo games, from other EU member states. Sweden’s government claims its laws relating to the operation of the Svenske Spel monopoly prevent crime and provide protection for Sweden’s gambling market.
The EC has already stated that it requires Sweden and other monopoly-operating EU states to change laws to allow for free movement of trade and services between EU members.
If the EC finds Sweden’s justification for the monopoly unacceptable, it could take the country to the European Court of Justice which could mean several years of costly court action.
