Body calls for gambling industry to help fund problem gambling - Online Bingo News

September 19, 2007

The UK Gambling Commission’s Gambling Prevalence study to be released on Wednesday is likely to become a major factor in the fight against problem gambling being conducted by the Responsibility in Gambling Trust (RIGT).

With the Gambling Prevalence study focusing directly on problem gambling in the UK, it is likely to provide strong arguments for the Trust’s call for the funding of treatment, research and education programmes dealing with problem gambling.

Prior leaks of the reports contents are likely to show indications that gambling in the UK has increased and that there is also a subsequent increase in problem gambling related cases.  Until the report is fully released there is no indication that bingo online has been singled out by the report in any way.

As a result, online bingo halls and online bingo operators in general will be interested to know that RIGT is calling for 10 million pounds a year from both the UK land and online gambling industry to fund a strategy on tackling problem gambling.

"Just treating those who already have a problem is doing too little, too late," said RIGT Chairman John Greenway MP. "We need to take a more preventative approach and educate people about the risks of gambling.

"We are already spending ten times more on tackling problem gambling than in 2000, and we had previously called for a further doubling of our income by 2010. But we feel that even that is not enough."
