UK Prevalence study shows no increase in problem gambling - Online Bingo News

Gaming Industry News (GIN) has reported that the UK government’s Gambling Prevalence Study for 2007 does not show a rise in the number of problem gamblers since 1998. The new contradicts the expected rise in problem gambling predicted by many anti-gambling advocacy groups.

According to GIN the study shows 0.6% of the UK adult population has a gambling problem, almost the same level reported in 1998.

The UK Gambling Commission, the government body which commissioned the study, confirmed that the findings were largely unexpected. Peter Dean, the Commission chairman said: “The key message is that overall there has been surprisingly little change either in the number of gambling participants or to the number of problem gamblers since 1999. We remain concerned that there are still over a quarter of a million adults who are problem gamblers.

“The challenge, for us and for the industry, is to tackle this through the new licensing regime that has been put in place from September 1. British-based gambling operators must now comply with strict and detailed social responsibility obligations, and we will monitor how these requirements are met.”

GIN’s report does not indicate if the study took into account demarcations in the gambling industry such as online bingo and online bingo operators. The heavily regulated environment in which the UK online bingo industry operates tends to ensure issues such as problem gambling are well monitored.
