The business-oriented news group Bloomberg has posted an interesting article focusing on the future of state-run gambling monopolies within the European Union (EU), a hot topic in the online bingo industry. Concentrating on the work of the European Commission (EC) in its attempt to free up markets for the required free movement of trade, the article points out that the EC has taken action against no fewer than 10 of 27 member states on the issue. In the realms of online gambling, the EC has been particularly focused on addressing the French and Swedish monopolistic practices with the possibility of court action been taken against these two nations. Bloomberg quotes EC authority McCreevy as saying: "We're supposed to have an open market." The clear implications are that France and Sweden currently run gambling operations contrary to this ideal. Online bingo halls and operators of online bingo games entertainment will be keen to see such issues resolved in favour of greater access to these markets. The article also reports that the EC has warned Denmark, Finland, Hungary, the Netherlands, Austria and Italy over similar issues. The EU currently does not have a directive specific to gambling, but the EC argues that the EU’s treaty generally prohibits discrimination against businesses in other EU nations. The Bloomberg article is a positive step within the mainstream media in addressing issues affecting the online bingo community and the industry as a whole.
