In an ongoing story of interest to many in the online bingo industry, former BetonSports founder Gary Kaplan has been denied bail as he awaits trial for illegal Internet gambling charges. A Bloomberg story reports that Kaplan, who was captured by US authorities a few months after fleeing the US following an indictment over alleged illegal Internet betting, has had his bid to be bailed due to health considerations rejected. The judge in the case is reported as saying: "There is no condition or combination of conditions of release that would reasonably assure the defendant's appearance." The story of BetonSports fall from grace has been a bell weather case for people following developments in the US online gambling industry following the implementation of that country’s UIGEA laws. Online bingo halls and operators of online bingo games were amongst many now prohibited in participating in the US market due to UIGEA. A former big player in the US and world online gambling industry, BetonSports fell foul of the US Department of Justice and saw its former CEO David Carruthers arrested over a year ago. Since then, the London-based company has pleaded guilty to a single charge of racketeering and agreed to help US prosecutors by forwarding evidence against Kaplan who has pleaded not guilty.
