The annual European i-Gaming Congress and Expo is underway in Barcelona with an upbeat mood reflecting the industry’s fight-back against the effects of the US’ Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) which came into effect last year. Now in its sixth year, the Congress provides a chance for many industry players, including online bingo hall and free online bingo games operators, to discuss opportunities and the general state of the industry. This year, with the US market in virtual lockdown against foreign online gaming operators, many are looking to the potential of the international markets in South America, Asia and Europe. The online gambling industry and its niche online bingo industry has been identified in the past as the best performing online industry to come out of the Internet. Despite this, some say that there have been missed opportunities for the industry to take advantage of trends that may have led to greater development and business success for online operators. The Congress will provide a forum for discussions into these issues over the next few days. 888 Holdings CEO Gigi Levy commented that: "You could say we were too successful, too fast and enjoyed too much growth." However, in a reference to the future, he added that rewards in the industry can be substantial with up to GBP 233 billion a year spent on entertainment and GBP 468 billion a year spent on lifestyle-related activities. "Operators need to be openminded; detect trends fast and exploit them in a business sense; identify gaps in the customer experience that can be filled to improve the relationship and the experience; adopt best practice procedures from other industries and be prepared to constantly innovate," he said. "We need to be able to constantly offer a better and more innovative experience to the customer than other diversions and entertainments," he said.
