UK Leisure and gaming group Rank is blaming the recent England ban on smoking amongst other things for “a significant deterioration in revenue in recent weeks”. The company reports that, as a result of the slowdown, its operating profit will be "significantly" lower than in 2006. Rank operates Mecca Bingo and Grosvenor Casinos. Mecca bingo does operate and online bingo hall, but most of its bingo business is based in land-based operations where smoking by players is now prohibited. The smoking ban does not effect online bingo operations where players can continue to play and smoke in the comfort of their own homes, "While the recent trading difficulties affecting our UK retail businesses are worse than we had anticipated, we understand that they are shared by the broader UK bingo club and casino markets and are not unique to Rank," the firm said in a statement.
