A interview with a top US online gaming industry expert by the Las Vegas Sun has produced a prediction that sportsbetting over the Internet will be active within the next few years. Industry commentator and online pioneer Steve Budin told the Las Vegas Sun that he believes the US is hopelessly behind the times regards its current legal sports betting industry. He also believes it is only a matter of time before the major Nevada-based gaming corporations start taking bets within a regulated Internet national sports book. Commenting in during the interview on the international scene and the impact of the Bush Administration’s UIGEA law, Budin shows little respect for a policy which he views as grandstanding tactics in arresting offshore online operators when the government could have alternatively fostered a lucrative $12 billion a year industry to the benefit of all. "They're saying they want to know when the next CEO (of an offshore betting operation) lands at LaGuardia, like he's the next shoe bomber," Budin said, adding: "They want to stop the billions of dollars flowing out of the country, but I'm sure they realized that the business was going to fall back into the hands of street-based bookmakers, traditionally affiliated with the mob," Budin said. For the last year the US online gaming and betting market has been effectively closed to foreign online gaming operators due to the implementing of the controversial Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA). The predictions made by Budin that online betting will grow in the US make for cold comfort for many online bingo operators and online bingo halls struggling to make ends meet after the loss of the US market. There is currently a concerted effort within the US by some sectors to revise UIGEA to allow for a relaxation in access rights to the US market, but international free online bingo games operators may have a while to wait yet before a return to the US market is viable.
