European Union (EU) Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson’s trip to the US to lobby for better compensation in the World Trade Organization (WTO) dispute over online gambling has taken in a visit with anti-UIGEA Congressman Barney Frank. Following the US’ withdrawal from its WTO obligations relating to the online gambling industry, Mandelson is focusing mainly on securing good compensation for European online gambling companies. However, he is also taking the opportunity to join US-based calls for the ending of the contentious Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA), as championed by Barney Frank. Congressman Barney Frank is the US legislator at the forefront of the campaign against UIGEA which he hopes to replace with a bill that seeks to regulate the online gaming industry along the lines of the UK’s online industry. The adoption of Barney Frank’s proposed Internet Gambling Regulation and Enforcement Act would be a major boon to those online companies, including online bingo games operators and online bingo halls, looking for the reinstating of a level playing field for US and international operators. Regards the WTO compensation claims, Mandelson has already been on Record as saying: "When a member of the WTO defaults on its commitments, compensation is due. That's the case of online gambling." On his meeting with Barney Frank, Mandelson commented: "I think [Frank] takes a fair-minded, common sense approach to this and we look forward to that being effective legislation.” Online bingo operators were severely affected by the loss of the US market last year when UIGEA made it illegal for online gambling transactions to take place between US players and international gambling operators.
