News from the recent Asian Interactive Gaming conference held in Macau has industry pundits wondering if China is considering adopting a regulated online gambling policy for the Chinese mainland, according to a report in the Macau Daily Times. If true, a regulated Chinese online gaming market could possibly open one of the world’s potentially biggest makets to online bingo operators and online bingo halls. Francis Lui, the deputy chairman of the Galaxy Entertainment Group, is quoted in the report as "very excited by this business opportunity" and hopes to position his company for the changes if they happen. "Galaxy Entertainment Group is making moves to capitalise on an eventual legalising of internet gaming in the Mainland," said Lui. "Galaxy is very excited by this business opportunity and we have established a foundation through an agreement with an internet cafe operator in China. "Online betters in Asia are used to paying in person rather than through the internet. Internet cafes provide a convenient location for gaming sites to sell online credits. "Most forms of gaming continue to remain outlawed in the Mainland, including online betting, although the Chinese propensity for gaming could eventually see a change in position from the government," suggested the company executive. "There is undoubtedly a latent demand for online gambling and in time the market could open up to a limited number of operators located in China," he added. Online bingo games are currently a very small niche market in the Asian online gaming sector. The opportunity to market bingo online to a Chinese population would require development in terms of language and Chinese-orientated software while also establishing contacts with China-based online gaming operators.
