Malta receives EC assurance of open online gambling markets - Online Bingo News
May 28, 2008
Malta’s position as one of the European Union’s (EU) top online gaming jurisdictions received a boost when the European Commission's Charlie McCreevy praised the Malta Gaming Authority for its professionalism.
Most importantly for Malta, McCreevy was at pains to assure them that he is determined to enforce EU law to ensure open borders for the online gaming industry. This will be music to the ears of the many online bingo games operators and online bingo halls currently being restricted from access to a number of European Union markets.
The European Court of Justice classifies online gaming as a service covered by the laws and principles of the EU’s commitment to freedom of movement of services. Malta currently employs about 1,500 people in its online gaming industry and licenses a number of popular online bingo operations.
