Svenske Spel in early setback with litigation against Ladbrokes - Online Bingo News
May 30, 2008
Sweden’s state-run gambling monopoly Svenske Spel has been the news a lot recently, especially over speculation the company may be gearing up to be privatized in the face of a potential regulated gambling market being introduced in the Scandinavian country.
However, the most recent news concerning Svenske Spel is centred around the company having lost the first round in a legal action against UK gambling giant Ladbrokes over an advert Ladbrokes put out this month. The Swedes took exception to a play on words in the British ad which talked about “Swedish games with English odds”.
Both Ladbrokes and Svenske Spel operate bingo games online. Wht is interesting to online bingo industry observers is that Svenske Spel may be losing its monopoly over the Swedish bingo online market and its action against Ladbrokes could indicate how it will behave in a regulated market should this occur. Currently UK online bingo halls are not allowed to access the lucrative Swedish online bingo games market which has seen exceptional growth in the last few years.
