Popular land bingo and online bingo operator Gala Bingo is to hear a decision this Tuesday by the Birmingham City Council's licensing committee on its application to open a new bingo hall facility in that city. The application is not without controversy in that it has been reported by local media that Gala’s application encompasses four separate licenses for the single building, with none of the applications mentioning bingo. Representatives of the Council's say Gala of trying to 'circumvent the rules governing the maximum number of gaming machines,' according to the Birmingham Mail. 'The premises would appear to be one composite whole divided up into four different areas,' according to a report covered by the Mail. 'Facilities for the playing of bingo are not shown on the plans that form part of the application. Without such facilities the applicant could not be offering the principal activity for which they are applying and simply separating the premises artificially to enable them to offer the maximum number of machines, but without being able to comply with the terms of their license.' The Mail reports that Gala is also is attempting to split Gala Bingo clubs at Stockland Green, Rubery and Kingsbury Road, and Erdington, in an attempt to boost their allowable gambling machine numbers. Gala Bingo is a successful operator of online bingo games under the name of Gala Bingo and is a favourite amongst Bingo Street visitors. Online bingo halls have shown consistent growth as a sector while land bingo has been under increasing pressure due to the implementation of a smoking ban in public places and a controversial double tax policy on land bingo.
