Despite a recent visit to Antigua by a US trade delegation aimed at resolving the two country’s dispute over online gaming there seems little hope things are about to change for the better any time soon. According to comments to the Antigua Sun by Antigua Finance Minister Errol Cort, negotiations with the US over online gaming can be expected to continue for another two to three months. Online bingo industry observers will recall the two countries have been locked in a dispute over the US’ implementation of its notorious UIGEA legislation which effectively banned Antiguan online gaming companies, including online bingo halls, from doing business in the US. Antigua responded by taking the matter before the World Trade Organization (WTO) claiming the US had breached its commitments to free trade under its WTO obligations. Further discussions are scheduled for August 1, 2008. Many Antigua-based online bingo games operators were badly affected by the implementation of UIGEA in late 2006 along with many other non-US bingo online companies. Hopes that Antigua’s action brought against the US at the WTO would lead to a relaxing of UIGEA have so far proved elusive despite the WTO ruling in favour of the small Caribbean nation.
