A further deadline for an agreement between the US and the Caribbean island nation of Antigua over a dispute involving online gambling has been set for October 1. Negotiations between the two vastly different-in-size countries are a result of a challenge by Antigua to the US’ implementation of its notorious UIGEA legislation which saw non-US online gaming companies effectively barred from accessing the lucrative US market. Antigua claims the US is in violation of its World Trade Organization (WTO) obligations due to UIGEA, a claim upheld by the WTO which resulted in the US attempting to withdraw from those obligations. While a settlement continues to elude the two parties, online bingo industry observers will be closely following developments in the spat to see if a change in US online gambling policy is in the offing. Online bingo games operators and online bingo halls, some with Antigua-originated licenses, were badly hit by the implementation of UIGEA in late 2006. Antigua has pursued its case against the US largely due to its economic dependence on gambling as a source of income. The island has relied on gambling revenues to help its recovery from a previously devastating hurricane that destroyed the nation’s infrastructure.
