Wink Bingo are well known for their series of funny advertisments promoting online bingo, however their latest effort has been given the ‘thumbs down’ by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) and banned. The ill-fated advertisment portrays a female nurse on duty standing next to an operating trolley full of surgical equipment in the Maternity Unit of a hospital. The nurse's laptop read's 'Wink Bingo Winner' and she's celebrating her bingo jackpot win on Wink Bingo, while apparently ignoring the woman giving birth in the room behind her. The catch line reads: "Find the appropriate moment..." The advertisment implies that the nurse is neglecting her duties as a nurse because of her online bingo jackpot win. The ASA deemed the advertisment inappropriate and promptly banned it from the national press. The ASA commented on their decision saying, "We acknowledge that the intention of the ad was to portray a real-life situation in a humorous way, but considered that the ad nonetheless showed a health-care professional ignoring a woman giving birth in order to play bingo online." Since the advent of the UK's Gambling Act, more than a few gambling companies have had their advertisments pulled off the air in the UK due to the strict guidelines enforced by the ASA. Spacebar Media, advertising agency for Wink Bingo, say that they were trying to follow the guidelines and steer clear of the more racy ads that consistently broke the rules. In spite of this they inadvertently overstepped the 'inappropriate' mark.
