Sweden's Court of Appeals has submitted five key questions the the European Court of Justice on the subject of online gambling (including online bingo, casino, poker, sportsbetting and lottery) across borders of EU member states.
In the hope of clarification on European Union principles on cross-border online gambling of member nations, many industry observers will be awaiting the outcome alongside Sweden However the response is unlikely to be timely, with legal experts predicting that it could take more than a year for the answers to be provided.
Sweden's state monopoly Svenske Spel continues its supreme reign in the country, any foreign gambling firms trying to offer services such as online bingo, poker or casino on the Swedish market have been agressively excluded via lengthy litigation processes.
Apparently Sweden simply wishes to confirm that the country's Lottery Law is compliant with European Union law and principles. As to what response the Swedish Court of Appeals is holding out for, remains to be seen. But it possible that these questions were asked out of doubts fostered by their current state of monopoly.
