A regular game of bingo at the local Gala Bingo hall in Torquay, Devon, last week exploded into huge cheers when a first-time bingo player scooped the massive jackpot of almost £47,000!
53 year old Susan Williams had recently moved into the area and was wondering what to do when her friend Sue Guppy invited her down to the local bingo hall.
Susan had never played bingo before, either online bingo or the traditional game of bingo, but thought she'd 'give it a go' as she had nothing better to do.
The Gala Bingo High 5 jackpot game was playing, and at such a speed that Susan couldn't keep up, and suddenly the huge jackpot had been won and the entire bingo hall erupted in cheers.
"Because I had never played before, Sue was looking after me. It's such a fast game. Sue's hand went up even before mine. She was saying that I had won but I didn't realise how much. At first I thought it was about £5,000 but when I was told I thought 'Crikey, what are they talking about' and I went a bit peculiar. Then a brandy suddenly appeared."
"The fact that somebody can go to their local Gala club and win the big one on their first day is just fantastic, it's unbelievable."
Susan Williams, who is retired, hasn't decided how to spend her bingo winnings as yet, although she says her mobile phone is temperamental so she'll definitely be replacing that.
Wilma Stamp, Assistant Manager at the Torquay Gala Bingo club said, "Everybody in the club was clapping and cheering, it was absolutely electric. It's been fantastic at the Gala ever since High 5 was introdeuced - this is a massive win and she's a local lass."
"We are constantly hearing about the credit crunch so it's nice to have something like this happen in our community."
