In a surprising move for online bingo fans and supporters of the Wigan Warriors, the Rugby League giants have announced a 12 month sponsorship deal with bingo giant Mecca Bingo, reports the Manchester Evening News.
This unlikely partnership of bingo and rugby was dreamed up as part of a wide-ranging initiative by local regeneration projects to combat the impact of the recession. Wigan is particularly badly hit and suffers from high unemployment and a lack of unqualified workers.
The traditional cherry and white Warriors kit will feature the Meccabingo.com logo on both sides of the shirts for the duration of the 2009 Super League rugby season. If the sponsorship deal goes well with Mecca Bingo, then another year's contract is on the cards.
The Wigan Warriors will also be continuing its sponsorship deal with local company Totesport, featuring its logo on shirt sleeves and also on the delightful derrieres of the Warriors (on the back of their shorts – don't read between the lines!) With bingo fans predominantly hailing from the planet Venus, this strategically placed logo is bound to attract maximum attention from the ladies.
Why oh why didn't Mecca Bingo insist on placing their logo on the shorts? Even so, I'm sure that this year's Rugby League will attract an inordinate number of excited bingo fans watching the Young and Keen players Duck and Dive and eyeing up those glorious Legs Eleven...
