Nelson’s Palace, a bingo hall on Leeds Road is facing closure and subsequent demolition. Not only has the bingo hall shut down, locals will soon not be left with any reminder of a once thriving bingo hall.
The Nelson Palace bingo hall building was originally a theatre and cinema hall where film festivals, theatre productions, musicals, and other entertainment by the best performers from the country and even all over the world, were staged. The building faced a threat of being demolished once the theatre shut down sometime in the 1970's but it was saved through the campaign efforts of Mr Peter Miller. It then was turned into a bingo hall which ran successfully for many years. Unfortunately, the Nelson Palace bingo hall has since shut its doors and the bingo hall is no longer active.
Recent circumstances like the smoking ban and the steeply hiked bingo tax had made it unviable and the Nelson Palace Bingo hall was shut down. There is now a very distinct possibility of the building being demolished completely to make way for a car park. Earlier, the property lost its stone facade because Leeds Road was being widened. It seems now that the entire building will be demolished to make way for a car park to ease the parking problems of the central area of the town.
The Pendle Council and the Bingo Palace management are scheduled to have discussions over the next few week to decide the ultimate fate of this building. Local residents have fond memories of playing bingo games at Nelson's Palace and of having spent many an enjoyable evening under its roof.
Leeds Road will lose a venerable landmark if the Nelson Palace Bingo Hall building is indeed demolished.
