Elderly bingo player beaten “black and blue” - Online Bingo News

November 9, 2009

In a horrific incident, an elderly woman was beaten viciously in a bingo hall by another bingo player and worse still, the staff at the bingo hall have been accused of ignoring the attack and blithely continuing with a bingo game.

According to a witness who spoke to the Wandsworth Guardian on condition of anonymity, the staff at the Gala Bingo hall in Tooting continued calling numbers despite player’s requests to call the police. However, the staff deny the accusation insisting that the attack was a minor incident and say that the attacker has been banned from the premises.

The attack took place in front of several bingo players on a Tuesday afternoon, the elderly woman, thought to be in her 70s tripped when she was walking away from the bingo area and fell over the attacker’s legs which were sticking out into an aisle.

When she requested the younger woman, described as being in her 30s, to tuck her legs in, she was attacked. So vicious was the attack that a male attendant had to separate the two. The witness said about the attacker, ““The woman had won £600 earlier in the day so she should have been in a happy mood. Instead she punched an elderly woman hard in the side of the face.

“Her face was black and blue afterwards. The attack went on for about five or 10 minutes, it was a complete mismatch, not just in terms of age but also size. I’m disgusted by the whole affair and Gala should be ashamed of themselves.”

Gala Bingo has confirmed that the staff waited till the bingo game was over before doing anything about the attack. A Gala Bingo spokesperson said, “We can confirm there was an incident in our Tooting bingo club on October 20, which did not result in either a formal complaint to the company or the police.”

“Gala Coral takes the safety of our staff and customers very seriously. The club manager took statements from both involved and took the immediate decision to remove one of the individuals from the club, in addition to barring her from the Gala Bingo club in Tooting.”
